“TRIO has been the greatest program I have ever joined. I only started during college, but would have liked to join earlier and be a part of TRIO Upward Bound in high school. I got help and discovered what I wanted to do in college thanks to not only the coaches, but also the students in the program. The tutors helped me so much during my earlier years as an undergraduate so I could do well in my classes to achieve the grades I wanted. My mentors helped me not only build confidence in pursuing things I was interested in, but also showed me how to make the most out of things so I could succeed. They would talk to me about how to approach opportunities. Thanks to their help, I was able to experience a life-changing internship that made me interested in pursuing a PhD. I appreciated the help from my mentors and tutors, which made me want to give back, so I applied to be one as well. I was able to share my knowledge and experiences as an undergrad with other students as both a tutor and mentor to students in their first year in college.
Initially I wanted to help people in the hospital as a doctor, but after doing a National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates at Zoo Miami and the Everglades, I changed what career I wanted to pursue. Students should be in programs like TRIO as it helps them discover who they want to be in college and what careers they like to go into for the rest of their lives. I am honored to be part of TRIO Student Support Services and Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Programs. If someone from the TRIO program needs help, I am there to help them. I want to get more students into the programs so they can benefit like me. Without TRIO being the guide for my education, I probably would not be in college and instead be doing a job I would be miserable at.”

“The TRIO Student Support Services program was the first community I joined when I enrolled at FIU, and it has been one of the most meaningful parts of my college experience. As a first-generation Nicaraguan-American student, finding a space where I felt supported, understood, and uplifted made all the difference. Through SSS, I grew not only as a student but as a person, surrounded by peers and mentors who truly cared about my success. With the incredible guidance of Ms. Yoldine and Ms. Moira, I gained the confidence to pursue new opportunities – like joining the FIU Pre-Law Path Cohort VII Scholars program. Working as a Program Assistant in the SSS office for two years allowed me to grow even deeper connections with SSS members, serving as a personal safe space on campus. Because of SSS, I’ve gained professional clarity, community engagement experience, and a family I plan to always keep close. I’m leaving FIU confident and inspired to give back to others the same way SSS poured into me.”

‘I first learned about the Student Support Services program while attending Broward College and joining SSS at FIU truly became a turning point in my academic journey. As a first-generation college student and a mother of three, balancing school, work, and family has not always been easy, but the SSS community made me feel supported every step of the way. Through the guidance, advising, and encouragement I received, I gained the confidence to keep pushing forward, even during challenging times. The program reminded me that my goals were achievable and that my story mattered. Today, as I approach graduation, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunities and support SSS provided, and I hope my journey inspires other First Gen students and parents to keep believing in their dreams.”

“My experience with the TRIO program has given me hope and purpose, as well as helping me establish lifelong values and priorities. TRIO SSS has transformed my outlook on life. I started TRIO SSS at FIU in Spring 2023 and it was the best decision I have ever made. Getting involved with TRIO has been beneficial and influential. The program feels like a family away from home; they genuinely care for their students and always go beyond for them. Being a part of TRIO has significantly contributed to my success in college and life. It was truly a game changer, providing the support and encouragement I needed at a critical time. I am deeply grateful for their help; they encouraged and pushed me to keep going, which was exactly what I needed. The aspect I appreciate most about TRIO SSS is the safe and supportive environment it offers. Joining the federal TRIO program was not something I anticipated when I started college, but it turned out to be an excellent decision.”

“The impact of the Student Support Services Program (SSS) on my college journey has been profound. Without SSS, I wouldn’t be the person I am today as a first-generation college graduate. The mentorship provided, especially having Moira Lertora as my support, has been invaluable. SSS not only supported me academically but also played a crucial role in my professional growth. The encouragement I received from SSS is what motivates me to pursue my MBA. The program has been a guiding light, shaping not just my educational path but also my future aspirations. I am forever grateful for the opportunities, resources, support, and belief in me that SSS has provided.”
